That was in macOS Earlier this week, we updated to The most serious problem with Disk Utility remains its manifest inability to run First Aid on some volumes and containers, in particular Time Machine backup stores.

This problem persists, although currently it now seems confined to APFS backup volumes. In the past, a variety of errors have been blamed for this failure, but it has also been possible to work around it by manually ejecting the volume or container you want to check.

Each time, the error message reports that the container holding the backup volume remains mounted, even though all volumes have been successfully unmounted, and Disk Utility also considers the container to be unmounted. As I noted six months ago , these problems with unmounting containers and volumes for First Aid have persisted for over four years. Less serious, but more confusing, is a sporadic bug which displays bizarre results after a disk has been erased, or partitioned into two or more containers.

Instead of showing a single container of 2 TB size, it shows two, with identical names and sizes, totalling 4 TB on the 2 TB disk. This is also shown in the partition map. Previously, this bizarre behaviour occurred frequently, and it seems to have become less common in macOS When using more complex partitioning schemes, the results can be even more puzzling. This 2 TB disk was successfully repartitioned into three containers, two of GB and the third of 1.

At the end of that, Disk Utility insisted that there were three partitions of GB and one of 1. Note that the superfluous, greyed out volume is shown as an empty container. In all cases, quitting Disk Utility and opening it again rectifies the problem, and brings the displayed structure and size of the disk back into kilter.

This is a serious bug, and the only workaround is to run the check in Recovery Mode. Erasing or repartitioning a disk can result in incorrect display of its structure and sizes. The workaround is to quit Disk Utility and open it again, when the error should be corrected.

It also seems to have provided direct help under NDA. Like Like. Have you actually read the EU document? If so, could you explain to me what that has to do with disclosing information specifically about APFS? I do not know for sure, but the fact is that developers complaint that Apple has not release all required information needed, besides not making API available. The fact is that Apple has only released part of the required information. That makes difficult if not impossible to support APFS.

APFS support status Likewise, while the Volume Rebuild can repair many drives with volume structures problems, a full rebuild that reorganizes the volume structures can only be implemented once Apple provides further documentation.

The same applies to any low-level API. What if Apple and others have been building one in the two years since those statements were made? I cannot tell much more, precisely because of the NDA, but I have such information from all developers involved not assumptions, but facts. In summary, they have not received the full required documentation from Apple, and Apple has not yet released the API needed.

So, the problem is Apple. I know what the developers say. Some examples are indicated in the links above by such developers. They say that Apple has not released full documentation or API, which are required. I guess until they sort the bugs out they will keep it to themselves.

Like Liked by 2 people. Howard, thanks for this article, and all else. It has been quite a long interval for Disk Utility and its First Aid feature to be fraught with problems and failures. My internal and encrypted Monterey Disk Utility takes a long time minutes to enumerate my external drives 7 drives in total in various enclosures. I selected and unmounted the Time Machine volume, also a slow process. I checked and noted that the APSF container listed as unmounted.

Then I clicked First Aid with my fingers crossed… it is currently running! Here are the results so far:. Volume is already unmounted. Checking the checkpoint with transaction ID Checking the space manager. Checking the space manager free queue trees Checking the object map.

Maybe I just had some good luck, but it seems that this might be a better task to run in the Recovery environment anyway. It seems that the issues with volume unmounting, at least within Disk Utility, are improved, but not fixed fully.

Howard, much of what you write is way over my head, as an end-user but end user since rumors confirmed the imminent launch of the Mac in , purchasing my first smiley faced Mac on official launch day in Airport Utility is no longer available as a Mac application from Apple, though it remains available as an iOS application.

As even the youngest Time Capsules are now over 4 years old, most should have been replaced some time ago. I have used Macs since and have found the perpetual poor performance of Disk First Aid to be an embarrassment for Apple — perhaps even scandalous! Disk corruption is serious business and I have found more than once that I had to completely wipe a system disk and reinstall.

It seems preposterous a third party like Disk Warrior has a more comprehensive tool than the designer of the file system. I am very surprised that Apple customers have not made more of a racket about this state of affairs and have put up with this for more than 30 years!

Perhaps we need to shout about it now. Cmd stuff has been working all the time without any glitches. We discussed whether to check the snapshots in a TM backup some time ago. There seems little point in checking your backup volume without checking those backups.

Very weird and unbelivable bug given that Apple own cmd tools work. Yes, although it does try to unmount the volume to be checked first. You have to also unmount all TM snapshots from this volume — otherwise fsck will complain that volume is mounted for writing. More tomorrow. Can be unmounted manually or with few lines in bash script 3 in case of encrypted volumes they have to be unlocked without mounting prior of fsck run.

Running fsck directly is with APFS filesystem a bit more complicated then it used to be — still works though. Now I have had some moment to check Disk Utility — and bingo. It will always fail on TM volume and can also fail on regular volume in case it has mounted snapshots — maybe created by TM or by some other tool e. All preparations must be done a priori — perfectly doable for cmd fans but not straight forward. So though your article perfectly captures what probably most people experience when trying to check their precious TM volume its conclusions could be a bit more optimistic — there is no need to restart mac in Recovery to achieve this simple system maintenance task:.

For a start, you have to know where and how to find them, and then to unmount the backup disk before unmounting the snapshots, or TM just keeps adding the snapshots back, as fast as you can unmount them.

I explain this tomorrow, without any need for the command line. I think it is another bug in TM subsystem. It is real shame Apple provides very sketchy documentation forcing us to investigate such simple things. On completion of those, it should remount the volume, following which TM will automatically remount all its snapshots.

I have seen both of these issues. Would randomly eject and sometimes screw up the drive formatting. DU would have trouble checking it and say it was failed every time though it still seemed to still work fine.
