It will give you some options in a menu. Click OK. Then, resize your page to fit your file. A pop up menu will open with some settings you can change if you like. Click OK and close that pop up menu. Select your settings in the menu, click OK, and close the menu. Play around with your settings and experiment a little. I found using the Single Scan Edge Detection setting helped preserve more texture in rougher style line art drawings. Edge Detection – pretty much an auto trace function, higher threshold value for more details.

Color Quantization – traces around reduced color values, lower value means less area traced, higher value means more area traced. Your traced vector image should be visible. Click on the vector image, and drag it off to the side. Underneath it will be the original raster image you traced. Click and delete it, and move your vector image back onto the page. If your vector contains solid black, now is the time to shift the fill color before saving. Other than post editing the vector color profile in Affinity Designer, I did not find another way to prevent Inkscape from saving a vector that was solid black in Grayscale.

Inkscape works with. SVG by default but there is an option to save as. It took a couple of minutes just for it to trace my example image, whereas Inkscape and Illustrator are nearly instantaneous. Between those three options you should be able to meet all of your vector tracing needs, as cumbersome as it may be.

So I will just avoid. You can use Inkscape to trace images and xnconvert to save to webp format. Both are free open source software. I have used DrawPlus since the first version! I had always upgraded to the new release up to DrawPlus X8. Affinity Designer is essentially a remake of DrawPlus.

DrawPlus is such a great program, but there are some areas that are lacking compared to Adobe Illustrator or CorelDraw, but for the price difference, hands down Serif always wins! I have been reluctant to purchase Affinity, since DrawPlus X8 is so great. Today after downloading the Affinity trial and one of the first things that I noticed is that there is no AutoTrace function!

I thought maybe I was just not finding it, so I did an an online search and found your blog post. I will say that I am shocked that there is no AutoTrace function in Affinity. Autotracing is the process of converting a bitmap into a vector graphic.

In DrawPlus, autotracing can be performed in the AutoTrace studio, a dedicated studio environment which uses a variety of profiles. Kinda makes me wish that I could have been a fly on the wall during the Serif corporate staff meetings when they decided to Trash the AutoTrace function when they redesigned DrawPlus and named it Affinity.

Also how they trashed all the other Serif Products like WebPlus etc. Sketch it. Capture it. Trace it. We believe that great ideas start on paper.

Then, to turn your drawings into vectors, just hit the Auto Trace button. Drag and Drop Import. Photos Import. Auto Trace works great with black and white sketches. In just a few taps, your raster drawing will become a vector graphic with infinite resolution and the ability to scale up to any size. You can also adjust the complexity and contrast settings to get the perfect level of detail in your sketch. Bring your artwork to the next level. You can add shadows, blur, or even use our Unsplash Integration feature to create a background from a huge library of high-quality images.

We support iCloud Sync Your Vectornator documents will automatically sync and save any changes you make in iCloud, so you can easily work on them at any time, across all of your devices. Transform photos into paintings. Our Auto Trace feature turns any photo into a painting-like vector image — one that you can make as big as you want without any lost details.

Blow it up to make a beautiful desktop background, or have it printed on a huge canvas to hang on your wall.

You will find this button at the right corner of this Trace Bitmap dialog box. Once you click on the Update button you can see the preview of traced image.

Now you can also choose the multiple scans option in place of a single scan for better tracing results. So I will click on it. Enable Remove background option also for removing background by clicking on the check box of it and click on Apply button of this trace bitmap dialog box.

Now if I move traced image you can see there is now white background behind it. So with this method, you can trace black and white images very easily. Now let us do this with a color image and see what will happen. For this purpose, I will take this bird image in the same way as we have been imported the logo images in previous steps.

Now click on the Single scan button and you can see it will trace this image in black and white color scale. And then click on the down arrow button of the Brightness steps option and choose the Colors option from the list to a scan this image with colors. And click on the Update button again and it will give you a result like this. You can see the background is not so clear. So it is difficult to remove the background of this type of image by trace image method. Now let us go through another way, through which we can remove background.

In this method, we first trace the object with the Bezier tool which we want to remain in our image. Here in this image, I will make a path around this bird by using the Bezier tool. So take this tool from the tool panel. And start making a selection like this.

And it will become a good selection path around this bird. Now that the Image Trace window is open, click the image to select it. Like the tracing a logo process, the image is not selected if the options are grayed out. Therefore, ensure that your photo is selected using the Selection tool V before continuing with the next steps.

Now we begin the tracing process. But first, we will have to convert the image into a Black and White vector image. To do that, go to the Image Trace panel, click on Mode , and select Black and White from the preset drop-down menu.

Then click Trace in the bottom right corner of the Image Trace window. And Done! We have converted the photo into a black and white vector image. But the process does not end here. It is time to make a limited color version of the picture. Once you are done with it, go to the Image trace panel again and click on Mode.

Then, select Color from the dropdown menu. Before choosing your palette size, it is essential to set your Palette to Limited. Select Limited from the drop-down menu. As with the logo tracing process, it is crucial to reduce the size of your palette. To do that, go to the Colors section and select 20 colors out of the default preset that has 30 colors. Then, click Trace in the bottom right corner of the Image Trace window as you have done previously.

Keep in mind that, depending on your settings, this process might take a while. So, before you panic and start clicking other settings, give it some time to process and trace the image. Just like that, you have a vector version of your photo! You may still need to adjust the vector result and perfect it, but the important thing is that now you can use the scalable nature of the vector graphic to your advantage. You can resize the image and scale up as much as you want without negatively affecting its quality.

Vectornator is another graphic design software that is an excellent tool for creating graphics. Auto Trace, just like Image Trace, automatically converts images into vector shapes.

If you want to create a vectorized version of an image, you can use auto trace to do that and save time. Similarly, you can use Vectornator’s Auto Trace feature to turn your favorite logos into vectors. Open a photo using the Document Picker, or import a photo into your document using the Import Tab inside the Inspector. To select the image, remember to unlock it. You will find two sliders in this panel:. Before performing the Auto Trace , make sure to adjust the number of paths and the path size settings mentioned above.

Now you are ready to tap the Auto Trace button. You will have vectorized versions of your image in a matter of seconds. After your image is converted into vector shapes, you can go ahead and edit the paths via the advanced options.

We hope this article inspired you to experiment with image tracing in Illustrator and create beautiful vector images and logos. If you are looking for an alternative method to achieve the same result, Vectornator is the tool to go.

You can use its Auto Trace feature to achieve the same result in fewer steps, as shown above. Of course, there is. You can always use the drawing tools in Illustrator to have more control when tracing an image.
