With a healthy variety of mission types, no shortage of goals to work toward new weapons, perks, abilities , and more post-release support in the works, it’s a shining example of how to do co-op shooters right.

Back 4 Blood picks up where Left 4 Dead left off, expanding on its campaign structure with modern conveniences and a unique deck-based progression system. Instead of just picking a character based on their voice lines Coach is unbeatable , Back 4 Blood’s survivors come with unique starting equipment and perks that serve as blueprints to build off with cards. By drawing cards after each mission, you can slowly become the dedicated team healer, melee specialist, or demolition expert.

You can also play solo or dip into the PvP mode in which players take control of the zombies, but campaign co-op is what makes Back 4 Blood great. Read more: How Turtle Rock Studios righted itself after rolling on its back opens in new tab. Release date: Developer: Fatshark Steam opens in new tab.

Vermintide 2 is a fully cooperative FPS where you and three friends axe, arrow, magic, and sword your way through a variety of Warhammer baddies. The sequel ramps things up significantly from the original with more weapon types, enemies, and a new progression system centered around fairly generous loot boxes.

It’s intensely satisfying melee combat on a scale you just can’t get anywhere else, especially in the comfort of a four-person party with friends. Release date: Developer: Bohemia Interactive Steam. Bungie proved its talent for weapon and encounter design in the Halo series, but Destiny 2 fits those guns into a dazzling new sci-fi setting with RPG elements and a strong reliance on fighting for fresh loot. The community has struggled to get on board with Destiny 2’s new seasonal structure, but if you’re a new player there are hundreds of hours of great missions, much of which you can access for free.

Competitive PvP is fairly decent, but Destiny 2’s very best missions ask six players to come together in meticulously designed raids—part puzzles, part shooting challenges.

As you earn power levels, you earn a huge collection of beautiful sci-fi guns, many with pages of backstory attached. Destiny 2 still needs to prove itself as a long term prospect as a living game for really devoted hobbyists but, moment to moment, it’s a beautifully designed FPS that still feels amazing a thousand hours in.

With the ideas that drove its predecessor validated by strong sales, Gearbox had the resources to pour production value into the second coming of its silly, more-is-more approach to a grindy FPS.

Bandits scream, limp, kamikaze, and sputter last words. The Goliath subverts your years of training, counter-intuitively going into Hulk mode when you headshot it. Mutated pests swoop, leap, burrow, and shield their vulnerable spots. Polished, playful, and our favorite antidote to military shooters that take themselves too seriously. Borderlands 3 may be newer and shinier, but we preferred the romp across Pandora in Borderlands 2, and it has the advantages of being cheaper and playable on any modern PC.

The years-long effort of a group of modders, Sven is player cooperative Half-Life played on dozens of crazy, homemade maps. Download an assortment of weird maps, hop in Discord with five or six of your buddies, and lose yourself in hours of retro-weirdness, laughter, and awkward platforming.

An outstanding co-op FPS for blasting waves of bots, Insurgency’s mission structure produces a ton of tension. Everyone on your team has a single life, but dead teammates respawn if an objective gets completed. This setup creates some brutal indoor defenses where two or three remaining players cover doorways as seconds tick down, trying to pick the right moment to reload without getting caught with an empty rifle. A points-based gun customization system allows for genuinely different playstyles, and Insurgency’s spasmodic bot AI makes enemy soldiers easy in some moments, but unpredictably deadly at others.

The main mode is a PvPvE showdown between 12 players that’s a bit like a battle royale, except there’s no circle that forces players to group up. Instead, hunters are incentivized to search for bounty monsters to fight, defeat them, and escape for big rewards. It’s a weird game to explain if you haven’t played it, but the rules are really just there to give players a reason to find each other and duke it with some of the coolest guns ever coded—you haven’t lived until you’ve fanned the hammer of a six-shooter into a room of baddies, kill everyone in sight, and triumphantly reload your ancient iron over 18 seconds.

Every shot counts in a world before full-auto. Over five years since its launch, Titanfall 2 is still a must-play, with its unique blend of mech combat and intense, fast-paced gunplay. Again, the solo campaign is also top draw, with a compelling story and a refreshing focus on gameplay over wild cinematics and set pieces.

The full Twinfinite Titanfall 2 review offers our detailed impressions of the game. It would be hard to pick a favorite among them, in all honesty, which is likely to differ from player to player depending on the setting that speaks to their preference most, from WW2 theatres to the far-flung future of Infinite Warfare. And since its launch, Warzone has evolved into more than just a spin-off of the mainline games, serving as a platform to bind the entire series together.

New announcements, for example, are often made within the game itself as the environment shifts and changes from update to update. Destiny exploded onto the scene in , attracting interest for its fusion of exciting futuristic gunplay and shared-world, MMO elements.

Importantly, it was all designed and built by the same development team behind the original Halo trilogy: Bungie. The sequel, Destiny 2, improves on the original in every way, offering more refined gameplay, larger and more varied environments, and a consistent string of updates and large expansions that continue to take its saga in new directions. Again, the game not only receives consistent updates but enormous expansions that incorporate new characters and storylines to create a galaxy of content that is enjoyed by a huge community of players.

Twinfinite reviewed Destiny 2 back in , and you can find reviews of each major expansion since by searching the site.

Of course, it also featured better progression mechanics and more refined sandbox, shooter gameplay, but it was the direction of its story and premise that really laid down a template for Ubisoft to follow moving forward.

And follow it has, with a fourth, fifth, and now sixth entry as of So how did we arrive at Far Cry 4 as our top choice? For us, it has the best balance of gameplay, progression, and story overall. The open-world itself is unique, too, with its mountainous Himalayan setting completely different from anything the series has explored since. But honestly, with each new Far Cry it feels as though the charm and purity of that beloved sandbox shooter formula are becoming staler and staler.

What it certainly did do, though, was spawn a craze that ended up taking the games industry by storm. It popularized the last-man-standing loop, creating a blueprint that has since become a mainstay: parachute from an aircraft, scavenge for weapons, and fight to the death as an ever-shrinking circle of doom approaches from all sides. If you have only played Fortnite or Apex Legends, PUBG is their military-sim father, in which realism is a key part of the survival experience not present in those other games.

It’s more colorful than CS:GO, but the clean visuals prove that the emphasis is on substance over style. Its short stint in Early Access is a testament to how much polish Riot put into its design, and how balanced its maps and heroes are. Both will only improve over time.

While solo play only offers bog standard zombie-slaying thrills, the action is oh so elevated by a fantastic co-op mode that delivers equal measures of camaraderie and chaos. The B-Movie charm and smart card system deliver dollops of slapstick and strategy to a game that makes you cherish every last gasp dive to that safe room… whether you make it there with your spleen intact or not.

Battlefield 1 is a WW1 shooter that showcases a terrifying amount of carnage. It’s got all the familiar BF modes that we’ve grown to love, including Conquest, Rush, and Domination, but this game adds the formidable Operations mode that takes the push and pull of war to new heights. This game works so well as a multiplayer shooter because of how finely it’s balanced – there’s no class, weapon, or tactic that gives an unfair advantage over others.

By their very nature, WW1 weapons lack true precision and make up for this via brute force and close-quarters effectiveness, so this really levels the playing field online. The maps are brilliant too, and they constantly change as the bombardment of explosives and ruined vehicles scar the landscape. Single-player is pretty enjoyable too, with the emotional war stories giving a sampler of the various fronts WW1 took place on. Overall, it’s an immense package.

The best of a crop of unashamedly old-school shooters that have come out in recent years. Plenty of modern games capture the feeling of playing Quake or Doom for the first time, but Dusk is the smoothest, the fastest, the goriest. It’s like the best of the 90s, but with a few modern-day twists that make it stand out like detailed reload animations and inventive level design. Maps are varied and keep you guessing: one minute, you’re in a spooky old farm, clearing out barns with a shotgun, the next you’re in a science lab that twists back on itself, the walls becoming the floor when you turn your head.

Like the best old-school shooters, it’s simply bloody good fun. Beefy weapons turn enemies into a fine red mist, and you zoom through levels as if on roller skates, only pausing to line up the perfect shot.

It’s topped off by a metal soundtrack that refuses to let you quit. It may be old enough to drive and gamble a young Gordon’s student loan fees under a bus, yet despite its age, Half-Life 2 still has a touch of G. This is an all-time shooter masterpiece. Whether you played it on a cutting edge rig on a debuting Steam in , or first sampled its City 17 delights courtesy of Valve’s brilliant Orange Box bundle, the core of Half-Life 2’s greatness remains unblemished.

Few other shooters before or since show such a level of masterly pacing. From the extra chilling Cold War opening vibes of that iconic plaza to the zombie-mangling Gravity Gun fun of Ravenholm, Half-Life 2 shuffles between thematic genres with unerring grace.

He may never say a word, but Gordon Freeman’s actions carry more weight than pretty much every Call of Duty character combined. It may not be the most important game in the series — that nod goes to the iconic third entry — but Far Cry 6 is still a superior shooter. Does it still lean heavily on a lot of well-worn Ubisoft tropes? Yet look past the dinky dachshund sidekicks named after a Spanish sausage and the typically assured, if samey stealth, and you’ll find an FPS that feels like a much needed turning point for Far Cry.

New additions like the Supremo Backpacks open up creative new avenues for both sneaky and explosive chaos, further enlivening Far Cry’s already intoxicating power fantasy.

Better yet? With the introduction of freedom fighter Dani — who you can actually see, listen to and emote alongside in third-person cutscenes — Far Cry has finally given us a protagonist who’s actually worth rooting for. And all it took was half a dozen entries. When it comes to sandbox shooters, few do madcap spectacle better than Far Cry 6. Never has a game so intelligent tried so hard to look like an idiot, or been so screamingly funny with it. On Bulletstorm ‘s surface, you’ll find a brash, knowing, don’t-give-a-fuck attitude, sitting on a layer of the most gloriously creative cursing you’ve ever heard in a video game.

Beneath, you’ll find one of the densest, most detailed, widest branching FPS systems ever devised. The genius of Bulletstorm lies with its Skillshots. Imagine if a new Tony Hawk’s game served up tricks but replaced every Ollie and kickflip with increasingly gruesome ways of mangling mutants and you’re pretty much there.

Boot a dude in the balls then kick his head off. Launch some men into orbit with an alt-fire rocket, then pick them out of the sky like they were clay pigeons. Shunt every second enemy you meet into a cactus, because there’s literally always a life-affirmingly sharp cactus lying around.

What stings even more than the plant-based murder, though? The sad fact that we’ll probably never see such a brash, bright or commendably crude FPS like this again. The best Call of Duty campaign ever made… and it’s not close.

Still as fun as it always has been, though. Its early days were rough, but thanks to regular patches and a steady flow of new content, Siege has climbed the ranks to be one of the best PC FPS games on the market. The meta never stays the same for long, but one thing will always remain: the cheek-clenching tension of holding a corner.

A game that you can pick up and play pretty easily but take forever to master, Siege is always shifting and reshaping itself with each season so it constantly feels like a fresh game.

Unabashedly inspired by the work of id Software and 3D Realms, Dusk seeks to capture the spirit of nineties FPS nirvana while bringing its own twist and, hell, does it deliver. Imagine DOOM but with cultists and dual-wielding while you bunny hop around and utterly ruin some scarecrows and you have the right idea. Multiplayer only. The surprise contender on the battle royale block is one that actually has staying power, especially with it reaching fifty million players in a month or so and just improving from there.

Thanks to neat quirks like respawning, pinging, Legends, and so much more, this squad-based FPS can surely only improve even further from here, especially when fans are given more and more lore to dive into. Respawn Entertainment know how to make a slick shooter, which Apex Legends just continue to evidence. From our Apex Legends review :. Though its third entry has seen plenty of love, the second game in the Borderlands series was played pretty passionately by its fan for years after launch for a very good reason.

It never really gets old. With millions of guns to mess around with and a sense of humor that borders on the endearingly infantile, Borderlands 2 sees you traipsing around Pandora on the quest for an illustrious vault full of riches.

You will meet many friendly and not so faces in your time with Borderlands 2 with the game touted as being largely responsible for the rise of the looter shooter. Following the infamous sales disaster of the previous entry in the legendary series, nobody expected The New Order to be as wonderful as it was and to reinvigorate the tired FPS genre while it was at it. Releasing at a time when cover shooting was in basically every action imaginable, The New Order instead chose to go back to its simple roots and allowed you to mow down Nazis like an action hero.

While The New Colossus and Youngblood went a bit overboard with their tones, The New Order embraced the grimmest sides of war while also including some moments of levity to keep things balanced. DOOM Eternal really does make the excellent DOOM look a little tame by comparison, it offering a much bigger scale, faster pace, and more methods of mayhem than ever as you seek to rid Earth of Hell.

Modern Warfare seems to have pleased both sides of the camp, it featuring traditional multiplayer, a BR called Warzone, and even a short but sweet campaign.
