Best, Tim. I bought a new Windows 7 desktop received last week pre-installed with a “starter” version of Office. I could have purchase a key directly from an Office program but Microsoft made a condition that I had to sign up for hotmail and other social media accounts in order to buy the download.

I didn’t want or need these extras. So I found a great product key on Amazon at a much lower price and no requirements to set up ancillary unwanted accounts. I just entered the product key and it installed in a flash. I’m really pleased with and was used to the ribbon from using Office The backstage area took some getting used to, but I am comfortable with it because it is a nice area that shows all of your options for the file. My only criticism is the tiny text and icon sizes in the various ribbon tabs.

It is not very easy on the eyes. From what I have researched in the MS forums and knowledge base articles, this tiny text size is hard-programmed into the software and can’t be altered via the Office Suite. And I don’t want to change my resoultion because I like it and it is the default suggested resolution. Office didn’t have such tiny text and icons in it’s ribbon on my older XP computer! In my new computer I can see the small text but have to look much more carefully.

And for senior citizens or those with vision issues, it is tougher. MS should find an update to allow the user to set their own default size suitable for their vision capability. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. Let’s face it, MS Office is the industry standard. OK, there are cheaper and even free products that do some of what this does but compatibility can be a big issue. Outlook just about copes OK with multiple google accounts amazingly even hotmail requires a downloaded plug-in to work at all but is really geared towards an Exchange server infrastructure – not what most very small businesses have.

I decided against office for three main reasons: 1 When I bought this product, MS had a too restrictive license in place for – meaning that you could never move the license to a new PC. They have, I believe, now back-tracked on this but it was too late for me.

They told me it does not work properly in an “offline” mode. Well that is absolutely hopeless if, like me, you frequently travel to clients’ sites and need to use your word and excel.

The colour scheme is white or slightly dull white or slightly less dull white and causes a huge amount of well-documented eye-strain. For those not familiar with the version of office it is “ribbon” based interface which attempts to predict what actions you are likely to want to do based on the context of your work. For example, in Word to create a table into which you want to enter text you need to use the “insert” tab; to insert a box around existing text you need to use the “home” tab; to insert a box around the page you need to use the “page layout” tab.

Three totally different ways of doing what appear to many people to be the same thing. Similar quirks exist in the other programs too. The good news is that allows a great deal more customistion than did, but you are still stuck with the ribbon. You cannot move it to the side which would be FAR better for most so-called “wide-screen” laptops designed to watch movies [why?!? The “quick access” bar helps a little but it is not brilliant as A it is of limited size and B not all commands can be put there.

Fortunately, office does not try to force MS SkyDrive down your throat the whole time which does , but you can use it if you want – personally I would not even touch it with somebody else’s barge pole. Word offers a few new features over previous versions but excel is the biggest step-up. I use it for quite a few complex calculations connecting to external data sources and producing detailed analysis and it is significantly better than excel excel was too unusable to cope.

It handles more rows and columns too. Powerpoint is OK and has some new transitions but I rarely use it at all. In summary, this is the best office suite out at the moment better than and but it should not be – there should be something better!
